I know few of you have seen this already but the elk forum was lookin Awfully empty. . Still pretty excited bout this one.
It was Sunday morning 9- 2- 07 we had been there since Friday morning. Figured out where alot of fresh sign was and seen a bunch of elk cross over this mountain the day before. It was about a mile hike to the spot so we left camp about 5:15. Got to where we were gonna listen and watch and sat down next to one of the pines. There were a few bulls bugling in this area the day before so we were just hanging tight.
Bout 6:45 cummins heard a twig snap and looked to his right. And there stood a Cow bout 30 yds. I could not see her cause he was sitting a bit higher so I reached for the bow to circle the tree we were on. When I moved she bolted. Got an arrow knocked and Cummins jumped on the cow call to try and settle her down. Well it seemed like we ran round that tree 3 times before we settled down. I got a fix on her and she was now bout 70 yds away. her head was behind a tree so I put the mini stalk on. While Cummins kept her at ease with some Cow elk talk.
I finally got to where she was what I thought in bow range but was facing away. I got a range on her and she was 49 yards. Cummins threw out few more cow calls and she turned broadside. It was go time, I drew back settled in and let it fly. The arrow was going true, but since she was nervous and it was a long shot she jumped the string so it looked like I missed. Down the mountain she went. Replayed the arrow a few times in my mind and still thought she dodged it.
Went to where she was and didn't see my arrow looked down bout 10 yards and saw this.
Well she was hit and looked pretty darn good!! Did a quick follow of the blood trail and it was HEAVY!!! looked like I got something. We kinda hung there for a few minutes but the anticipation was killin me. Grabbed our gear and started the trail. I have never had a blood trail like this in my life.
Quote from Cummins "Stevie Wonder could follow this blood trail." I think he was right. Here is another pic on down the trail.
Well about 300 yards later there she laid. High fives and "heck yeahs" all around. Along with the catching of breath!!!
On the shot, when she jumped she backed up. the height of the arrow was right on but she backed up enough to where it went right across her neck. It was like I took a knife to her throat, which explained the HUGE blood trail. I definitely got LUCKY!!! But you all know that one, better to be lucky than good!!
It was the ROUGHEST country I have ever hunted in that is for sure. And here she is my first elk!! Me holding the Cow and Cummins holding the Vector cow call.
